This needs to be cut to the internal measurements of the frame. Your fabric needs to be about 5cm bigger on each side of the card. You can then cut it to size once you’ve got your frame. Place your embroidery onto the card. If you want to add relief, you can place cotton wool between the card and the fabric. Turn everything over. Fold the overhang of your embroidery design onto the card and glue it down.Pay particular attention to the corners. Cut the corners if you can’t fold over the fabric. You don’t want any irregularities once it’s all framed.  To make sure the fabric doesn’t come off, you can always glue bits of paper over the top. Again, make sure that they’re not covering the corners.Now you just have to put your embroidery in your frame and you’re done.Some people ma y want to make their frame from scratch. To do this, you’ll need pieces of wood and some good wood glue. You need to cut the wood to the size you want and cut diagonal joints at the edges. Glue the edges together and let it all dry for around 5 hours.Discover how to embroider eyes.Framing Your Embroidery Projects without GlueThere’s another way to frame embroidery. You can do this without glue but it’ll still take some time. Start by checking that the edges of your embroidery are uniform. The overhang needs to be the same on the left and the right and the top and the bottom. This will allow you to centre your embroidery. You can use thread to hold your embroidery in place. (Source: NicolePina)To avoid creases, iron your embroidery.  Once it’s flat, place your embroidery onto the card. The overhang will allow you to position your embroidery nicely in the centre of the frame.  To attach it without glue, you’re going to need to sew it down.With a needle and thread, start on one of the larger of the sides. Sew the two larger sides and then do the smaller sides.   This will give you a sort of grid.Make sure that you opt for a solid thread and pass two or three times if you need to. You don’t want to break a thread. Otherwise, your embroidery will hang.As you can guess this technique isn’t for beginners. However, if you get it right, it will hold your embroidery in place and you won’t have to worry about your embroidery coming loose, either.If you’re doing this for the first time, start with a small project. The bigger the embroidery, the harder it will be to keep in position as you attach it t o the card. Once you’ve got the technique sorted, you can move onto bigger projects.Should You Frame Embroidery with or without a Glass Pane?Whether or not you use a glass pane is down to each embroiderer. There are advantages and disadvantages to using one. Depending on the thread you use, you may want to think about whether or not you use a glass pane. You’ll need to take the frame apart, clean it, and put it all back together.It can flatten the embroidery: if you want your project to have some relief, you don’t want to flatten it behind the glass.However, there are also advantages to having it behind glass. The glass protects the embroidery from dirt and dust.  Some argue that the glass makes the whole thing look more “finished”. Of course, this is a matter of taste. After all, the decision is yours.With many different hand embroidery stitches (cross stitch, back stitch, crewel stitch, etc.), it can be difficult to get started. If you need help with embroidery stitches, needlework, and finding embroider y patterns, you might want to consider getting help from a private tutor. You can start with cross stitches before moving onto other stitches like the stem stitch, satin stitch, chain stitch, backstitch, and running stitch, for example. What is it Like to Attend West Chester University Brenda earned her bachelor's degree in English from West Chester University. She specializes in public speaking tutoring, computer science tutoring, and a number of other subjects. Below, she shares her experience at West Chester University: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. Brenda: West Chester University is situated in a suburban area, surrounded by neighborhoods where students can find off-campus housing within walking and biking distance. Theres also housing offered on campus. There are buses that provide transportation between the main campus and the south campus, which is about a mile away. I have never personally felt unsafe on campus. How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Brenda: The professors and advisers tend to be available when needed. Each professor is required to hold office hours and will often make appointments if asked. They also use school emails frequently. None of my classes had teaching assistants, so I cant speak to that. How would you describe the dorm liferooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Brenda: The facilities are nice, offering large rooms or suites. Each floor has a common area in its center with some form of entertainment. Rooms include beds, drawers, and desks with either one closet and one wardrobe or two closets. Each floor has two RAs who monitor the students and organize social events. Each floor also has a laundry room with free laundry. Aramark is the food company that staffs the dining facilities on campus. The food options offered are typically good. Additionally, many students enjoy the food trucks that sit on Church Street in the middle of campus. Many other restaurants are within walking or delivery distance of campus as well. Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? Brenda: West Chester is mainly known for its music education program, as well as its accounting program. However, its known as a utility school that boasts many different well-supported programs. Personally, I studied English, with minors in physics, French, and computer science. From what Ive seen, each of the departments in which I completed a minor were supported and taught their fields well. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Brenda: I joined a co-ed fraternity, but it was a band fraternity. I went into freshman year having spent the summer making friends while rehearsing with band. How helpful are the Career Centerand other student support services? Brenda: Many companies did recruit on campus, but they were not in my area of study. The Career Center reviewed my resume, but didnt provide new information when it came to the actual job search. How are the various study areas, such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Brenda: They all boast chairs and tables, with school computers from which to print assignments. In the dorms, study areas were sometimes used more for socializing than for actual study, but the library was always quiet. Describe the surrounding town. Brenda: The immediate surrounding area was mostly neighborhoods. One street in particular, Walnut Avenue, has houses that are almost entirely rented by students. Many restaurants and small shops sit in the downtown area, making it a draw for all students during the day. How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Brenda: West Chester hosts about 15,000 students each year, a number that is growing. It never felt overcrowded, though, and classes were often capped at 30 to 40 students, which ensured some student-teacher interaction. Throughout my whole college career, I only attended one course held in an auditorium. Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Brenda: In general, my English courses were a delight. Each class was discussion-based. The research seminars, which acted as capstone courses for the English degree, each concentrated on a different subject relevant to our society and encouraged us to view our world critically and intelligently. Upcoming Changes in the SAT Note: A more updated account of the SAT changes can be found here. You may have your grievances with the SAT, just as university professors may have theirs. Nearly everyone has a suggestion or two for the College Board when it comes to their infamous test. The College Board evidently listened to someone (perhaps even you), as they have recently announced several major revisions to the SAT that should take effect in 2016. It should be noted that the current SAT format will not change. There will still be Writing, Mathematics, and Critical Reading sections. However, the College Board hopes to make the test content more relevant to the material that students learn in their high school classes and closer to the material that theyll need to understand in order to do well in college. Thus, the College Board also intends to make the test more practical. [RELATED: What is an Average SAT Score?] There are some very specific modifications that could affect your SAT preparation but first, its critical to understand the rationale behind these changes. The SAT is designed to be the great equalizer in college admissions and to accurately predict students success in higher education. However, the College Board President, David Coleman, recently acknowledged that the SAT isnt doing the best it can to achieve these goals. Some experts say that high school grades are still a better predictor of future academic success than SAT scores. The proposed changes to the SAT are intended to bridge this gap and make SAT scores a more accurate measure of how well students will perform at the college level. Critical Reading Perhaps one of the largest problems with the current version of the SAT is the seemingly arbitrary vocabulary words that are used on the test. The College Board has heard this feedback, so students might not have to memorize these arcane terms anymore. According to the proposed changes, these words will be replaced with vocabulary that youd be far more likely to actually use in college and in everyday life. If you plan to take the test in 2016, ensure you locate and understand this new set of vocabulary words. [RELATED: What Does SAT Stand For?] Mathematics The SAT Mathematics changes are not as significant as the Critical Reading modifications. However, the College Board is attempting to recognize and pinpoint the equations and types of thinking that truly matter in college courses. Coleman specifically mentioned that proportional reasoning, linear equations, and linear functions are some of the question types that determine if students can succeed at the college level. Coleman also noted that pupils should be able to do more than just pick the correct answer. He suggested that they should be able to explain their mathematical reasoning as well. This strongly indicates that future SAT tests may have more of these question types and less of the multiple-choice format. Writing In addition to multiple-choice questions devoted to mechanics, the infamous essay is also found in this section. It is the essay that may undergo the largest revision on the new SAT. Right now, its designed to measure how well you can articulate an argument and string together cohesive thoughts but it doesnt take off many points for inaccurate statements staging as facts. So, it essentially allows students to fabricate facts to better support an argument. The more words you throw at a reader, the more words the reader will have to process to get at your ideas. When the words are meaningless or redundant, there is more to for the reader to ignore, slowing attempts to understand your message. Proofreaders, editors, and English teachers call this phenomenon “wordiness.” First and second language users of English can be wordy, but second language second language learners seem particularly prone to it. The blame for wordiness can be shared with English teachers since they routinely specify the number of words they want students to submit. The uninspired student may get to the end of his or her message but fail to reach the minimum number of words and push themselves to churn out unnecessary phrases, clauses, and sentences to meet the teacher’s requirements for the assignment. Padding a text with filler words may seem like the only option. But there are other causes, too. First language influences Wordiness can also be due to the learner’s first language. In French, for example, “la mere de mon ami” can be translated as “the mother of my friend.” This word-for-word translation uses five words to say what a native speaker would say in three: my friend’s mother. Nominalization But native speakers are also prone toward wordy sentences by employing nominalizations. Using a noun instead of a verb can bloat a sentence and obscure who did what to whom. Turning nouns into verbs can restore vigor and concision to your writing if we just try. Wordy:    The proliferation of nominalizations in a discursive formation maybe an indication of a tendency towards pomposity and abstraction. Concise:  Writers who overload their sentences with nominalizations tend to sound pompous and abstract. What’s the big deal? Whether intentional or unintentional, whether due to a first language influence or a tendency to use nominalizations, wordiness can befall us all. But what is the problem with wordiness? In short, wordiness detracts from the coherence and quality of your writing. It frustrates the reader who is trying to grasp quickly what you have written. It bores. It repels. Ditch filler words A writer can avoid being too wordy by reading through each paragraph and striking out any word that does not add to the meaning of the paragraph. Cut out all filler words.  Filler words represent words which sneak between relevant phrases in a sentence but are essentially useless. You can be sure you are removing filler words because when you cut them out the sentence still makes grammatical sense.   The removal of fillers can do a lot to improve the quality of a sentence.   For example in a sentence starting with “It is commonly believed that ……” the word “commonly” represents a filler which may be removed without altering the meaning of the sentence. Wordy:   It is commonly believed that there is a life after death. Concise:  It is believed that there is a life after death. Redundancies Redundancies are also considered another major cause of wordiness.   Writers in this context may include redundant words or information in sentences. For English as a Second Language learner, redundant words are often found in their characteristically descriptive writing. Synonyms are the main culprit. In an effort to demonstrate an extensive vocabulary, the writer might repeat the same thing in different ways. Readers are subjected to a lot of reading without learning anything new. Hence, by reducing redundancies in sentences, students can effectively write in a less wordy manner. Qualifiers Additionally, qualifiers may result in wordiness if they are overused in sentences. Conventionally, qualifiers are used before an adjective or adverbs to enhance or reduce the quality of the modified word. English writers often overuse intensifying qualifiers such as “really” or “very” which distracts the readers by making the sentences too wordy.   Great is one word. Very good is two. Really, really good is just a wordy way to say excellent, isnt it? Learning how to replace the intensifying words with one potent word is essential in reducing wordiness. If you feel the need to use intensifiers like “really” or “very,” it is time to improve your vocabulary.   For English as Second Language learners, especially, it is imperative to focus more time on learning potent words as opposed to many mediocre words. Logorrhea is considered a form wordiness which involves the deliberate use of long sentences or overly abstract wording. Both qualifiers and adjectives are overused to create sentences with extra words which unnecessarily complicate expository writing. This type of writing is often frustrating to readers through the extensive time taken to understand the ideas presented in the sentences. Adopting a more reader-friendly form of writing is crucial in enhancing the level understanding. Precise and concise sentences assist in succinctly conveying the message which is ideally the main reason for writing.
